"Coyote and the Fat Fish"

by Lionel Little Eagle

Congress has decided to hold official hearings to investigate the obvious price gouging that has taken place over the past year. They will pour through the sludge of documents, listen to the cleaver testimony of well paid and trained lawyers and oil executives. Then Congress and the Bush administration can say they are symbolically doing their jobs.

This reminds me of the story of Coyote and the Fat Fish. You see coyote was cleaver and knew a good thing when he saw it. He was also hungry and the peoples lake was full of fat fish. He disguised himself as a respected warrior, dressed in the finest outfit, beads and quill work danced in the breeze as did the stolen eagle feathers that hung from his head. Coyote approached the peoples lake and spoke boastfully of his history. He convinced the people that he was trustworthy, that he would be the instrument of protection for the people and their abundant fish of plenty. With this the people were tricked. When they left the lake coyote first quickly filled his stomach with the fish and then he filled his many baskets with the fish. He dipped his greedy paws deep into the lake until all the fish were gone. When the people returned they quickly discovered what coyote had done but they where unable to discover where coyote had gone. That winter was very hard one for the people. They learn a hard lesson about trust and greed.

When coyote arrived at his hiding place he tossed aside the disguise he had worn and laugh aloud, "Now I have all the fat fish and I will be happy forever!" In time the fat fish died, they began to stink up his hiding place. Eventually the pungent smell penetrated the hill sides, rose like a fog across the valley and smothered the desserts. There was no place where coyote could go that the smell did not accompanied him. In time Coyote had gotten use to the smell and would go on to many more of his coyote tricks but people of the lake would never be tricked by him again because the smell of his corruption would always gave him away.

One of the Coyote that Congress will be taking a look at is the Exxon Oil corporation. Good luck with that one. The Exxon's of this earth are the ones who elected Congress and George W. Bush. You noticed, I said "earth". The oil pumping corporations throughout the entire earth manipulate and drive our very life's right here on Turtle Island (North America). They are the elite and protect straws that stirs the oil barrels of greed and profit.

While you were out putting just enough gas in your car to get you to work (much less home), the Exxon corporation reported that their profits exceeded the nations of Kuwait, Libya and Qatar. This past quarter Exxon profits were $10 BILLION. To help ease their pain, Bush also authorized $14.5 BILLION in tax breaks and incentives for the oil industry. Exxon and Mobile has registered the highest quarterly profit earnings in U.S. history, but it has not spent a dime on alternative energy sources.

In the nearby lake where I live the fish are fat this winter. I have been told by my elder that this is a sign of a bitter cold winter to come. That elder lives day-to-day, he has no extra fire wood or reserves of heating oil tucked away in the back yard. This day-to-day existence is his reality and the reality of many people across Turtle Island. Our elders and other family members are going to have a very hard winter because they have been forced to choose between food for their family or heating oil for their family. The Exxon's of the world don't give a damn! They spit their nasty greed in the face of our elders.

Please take a moment, burn some sage, gather some fire wood, say a prayer for all the elders of all the direction. I would also ask that you contact your Congressman and hold them accountable. It is the expectation of the big oil corporations that you will not get involved, you will sit in silence and close your eyes to this un-parallel evil. But the smell will not go away!

It's time to put on the paint, dance the dance and seek the vision.
