The Death of Rachel Corrie
by David Rovics
When she sat down in the dirt
In front of your machine
A lovely woman dressed in red
You in military green
If you had met her in Jerusalem
You might have asked her on a date
But here you were in Gaza
Rolling towards the gate
As your foot went to the floor
Did you recall her eyes
Did her gaze remind you
That you've become what you despise
As you rolled on towards this woman
And ignored all the shouts to stop
Did you feel a shred of doubt
As you watched her body drop
And as your Caterpillar tracks
Upon her body pressed
With twenty tons of deadly force
Crushed the bones within her chest
Could you feel the contours of her face
As you took her life away
Did you serve your country well
On that cool spring day
And when you went back across the Green Line
Back to the open shore
Did you think that this was just another day
In a dirty war
And when you looked out on the water
Did you feel an empty void
Or was it just one more life you've taken
One more home destroyed

Rachel Corrie was an activist from Olympia, Washington.
She was murdered
three days ago by an Israeli (state) terrorist, who
purposefully ran over her
with an American-made bulldozer. She was trying to
prevent another innocent
Palestinian family's house from being destroyed. That
is, she was trying to
prevent yet another criminal, terrorist act from being
carried out by a
criminal, terrorist state that calls itself Israel. For
more information on
her death and on the activities of the International
Solidarity Movement, go
to www.palsolidarity.org.
In the midst of the tour I'm on I have not had time to
send emails to my list
much. I've written several other songs recently about
the occupation of
Palestine, and the words (and for some, the music) can be
found on my
website, www.davidrovics.com.
Other recent songs on the subject include "The
Key," "Occupation," and "Palestine." The most recent
songs have not yet been
recorded, but other new ones have, and all the songs from
all of my CDs are
(still) available for free download in MP3 form (go to my
website and click
on "listen to songs" to get to the MP3's, and click on
"song lyrics" to check
out the words). As always, feel free to use and spread
around these songs in
pretty much any way you see fit.
My perpetual tour around the country continues. In the
next month or so I'll
be hitting Washington State, Vancouver (BC), Montana,
South Dakota,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky,
Michigan, North
Carolina, DC, California and Oregon, and then at the end
of April I'm off to
Europe. Details are on my website under "gigs."
The tour thus far has been inspiring, in spite of - or
rather, because of,
the impending (and on-going) war. The organizing going
on in big and small
communities around the country is wonderful to see and to
be a part of. It
has certainly been reflected in the general turnout at my
concerts (I guess
that makes me a war profiteer... at least it would if I
were turning a
profit). I hope the movement grows, develops a broader,
deeper analysis, and
adopts tactics of massive nonviolent civil disobedience.
We need to shut
this country down.
Hope to see you on the road and in the streets! We have
a world to win!
Yours,
David
