Mindspring was established in January 2002 by a group of
Muslim intellectuals who saw the need to open a channel of
communication between the Western world and Islamic world.

The internet was seen as the means to begin that
discussion, which would serve as a basis from which to
organise further events in the western world, due to the
obvious limitations of the web in facilitating dialogue,"
said the organisers of Mindspring.
Indeed we see Mindspring in a supporting role to the
seminars, debates and discussions that we are planning to
organise at various venues where participants can meet one
another on a personal level. This virtual forum is
therefore a stepping-stone to open many channels of
communication as we explore different mediums and styles of
interaction. Whether it is through the Web or a seminar
organised at a university, the need for discussion is
apparent to anyone who follows the international events.
How people respond to this invitation and discussion may
well prove to be a microcosm of what mankind is to face in
the future.
There is a great need for intellectuals from both camps to
engage in discussion and debate particularly as we have
reached the most serious point in the 21st century's early
history. Indeed the Muslim world has experienced an
intellectual transformation in the last fifty years because
of the Islamic revival that has taken root in the Muslim
lands. This work was overshadowed by the cold war but with
the failure of socialism, attention soon shifted to the
growing resurgence of Islam intellectually and politically.
A visiting scholar at Harvard University for Middle
Eastern studies submitted a report to the US Congress in
which he said, 'Fundamentalists take the view that the
Shari'ah should be applied in all its details and that the
orders and prohibitions of God must be implemented
completely, and that it is binding on all Muslims. Islam is
the basic source of their strength and the Shari'ah is
suitable for application today as it was suitable for
application in the past.' He also said, "'Fundamentalists
deeply hate Western civilisation, they see it as the
greatest obstacle in the face of the application of Islamic
Law.' The American scholar John Esposito, in a report
submitted also to the American Congress stated: 'Those who
most threaten American interests are the Muslim
fundamentalists.'
Therefore western intellectuals need to discuss with
Muslim thinkers who advocate ideological change in the
Islamic lands, since that change is not only inevitable,
but there is also an urgent need to tackle global problems,
which in our view originate from the capitalist doctrine.
Whether we are tackling environmental or economic problems,
or the moral and social dilemmas created by advances in
science and technology. There is a great need for wisdom
and guidance in solving these complex problems.
Capitalism, Socialism, and Islam are the only three
ideologies, which provide mankind with a comprehensive
basis for progress. As for Marxism-Socialism, it failed
categorically as a thought and system, internationally as
well as universally. As a result two ideologies remain,
Islam and Capitalism.
Islam is the only other ideological alternative to
capitalism. It is a unique thought, and comprehensive
system that provides detailed solutions for human problems.
This unique and unparalleled system was implemented for
over thirteen centuries, until the destruction of the
Uthmani Khilafah by the European colonialists in 1924.
However, the Islamic nation with all her different peoples
continues to embrace this ideology despite the fact that it
was removed from their practical lives and from the
international sphere.
During this interregnum the western world has been at the
epicentre of philosophical, political, scientific and
economic ideas with the advent of the industrial revolution
and subsequent revolutions driven by science and
technology. But with so much progress, mankind has reached
a paradox where knowledge has become increasingly
specialised and complex, so even though our knowledge has
increased, humanity remains confounded by the ethical
problems of human cloning or the environmental problems in
preserving the earth's biodiversity let alone the basic
problems of poverty or preventable diseases that plagues
the world. It is for this reason that the world has seen
the growing resurgence of Islam because it provides
detailed solutions for all of life's problems, irrespective
of the time and place. Indeed the Islamic world will once
again become a source for the greatest ideas and
inventions.
Unfortunately the western world has remained unaware of
the rich intellectual, political and legislative
contributions by Muslim intellectuals in the last fifty
years, because we have been absent from the international
debates and discussions that would provide real
alternatives to solutions derived from the capitalist
creed. But this will change very soon as an ideological
storm is already evident on the horizon with the resurgence
of Islam, which will once again see the centre of knowledge
and wisdom return to the Muslim world with the
reestablishment of the Khilafah State. As a result it has
become imperative that discussion occurs between advocates
of western civilisation and Islam, since Islam provides new
directions in global thinking, which will inevitably shape
human history as it has, since it began over 1300 years
ago.
Mindspring therefore seeks to assemble the greatest minds
from the Muslim world and Western world to discuss the
critical issues of our time. Tackling the complex forces
and major trends shaping the world this century.
Participants reflect the evolving organic
interrelationships between politics, philosophy, economics,
art and literature, science and technology. A group of
people who focus as much on making emerging scientific
research and technologies a reality, to those who are
engaged in changing the political and economic landscape.
Participants therefore recognise the urgent need to discuss
the crucial philosophical, political, ethical and social
conundrums of our time and future world."
