Ireland is Part of Shameful War Coalition

by Eoin Dubsky

The Anglo-American attack of Iraq continues to be supported by Ireland, where US military flights overfly and refuel at Shannon Airport. A government motion was passed in Dail Eireann (parliament) end of March to continue Ireland's participation in the aggression, even if we don't call it that. Not a single politician from the Fianna Fail/Progressive Democrats government coalition (of the willing?) had the moral courage to vote against. Their shameful motion can be found here - http://www.gov.ie/debates-03/20Mar/Sect1.htm#3

PROTESTS AND RESISTANCE CONTINUE:

There have been too many demonstrations and protests to count. Top Oil, who do the refueling at Shannon Airport have been targeted, as have government ministers and houses of power. Indymedia Ireland have tried to link to a lot of these in the center of their homepage - with photos, reports, audio and video - http://www.indymedia.ie/

There is a daily vigil at 4 pm outside the GPO on O'Connell Street in Dublin, organized by Damien Moran of the Catholic Worker 5 who disarmed a US Navy aircraft last month at Shannon Airport. Karen Fallon is the last one from that ploughshares action still in prison.

Look out for: The millionaire builder Mick Wallace, who during the second Nice referendum and US attack of Afghanistan erected a sign saying "No to War! No to Nice! No to American Terrorism!", has put a new sign in the same city centre location today saying "WE HAVE BLOOD OF IRAQI CHILDREN ON OUR HANDS". There's a photo of it on my homepage - http://slack.redbrick.dcu.ie/

BEARING WITNESS AT SHANNON:

Your presence at Shannon Airport is needed NOW as much as ever before! The level of police intimidation though in Shannon has risen dramatically since the invasion of Iraq began. Activists living locally are constantly harassed, as are people who visit them or know them, and now even their landlord. We've exposed another one of Ireland's dirty little secrets I guess so - as my friend Tim Hourigan puts it - the Guardians of the Order (not the Law, the Pecking Order) are out in full force to scare away the trouble makers.

Read Tim's report - http://www.indymedia.ie/cgi-bin/newswire.cgi?id=38549

COURT ACTIONS CONTINUE:

Ed Horgan, a former Army Commandant, is racing through the High Court with a case to stop US military overflights and refueling in Ireland immediately because of the Iraq invasion. They've set next Thursday (April 3rd) already for his hearing. It would be great if you could make it to the Four Courts in Dublin that morning at 11 am to lend your support. Ed's email address is Edward.Horgan@ul.ie or you could send him a text message of support even to +353862380911.

My case (about Afghanistan, not Iraq) is still carrying on, and we will hopefully have a hearing shortly too now that we have got copies of all the orders made to allow the military flights through Ireland, and I've made another affidavit.

The Catholic Workers will have their case heard at the Circuit Court level, where you can get a jury trial. For updates see - http://www.geocities.com/pwdyson/pitstop.html

Some people who were arrested at Shannon Airport on demonstrations were on trial yesterday and have received Judge Mangan's all-time favourite sentence... banned from Co. Clare for two years. See - http://www.indymedia.ie/cgi-bin/newswire.cgi?id=38707
